This editorial letter is regarding the suicide of my cousin Brandon Bitner. More information on Brandon can be found at http://www.brandonbitner.com/.

A few days ago, an article was published in the Daily Item regarding a letter that several Midd-West School District parents sent out to the media. On behalf of my cousin Brandon, his family, and his friends, I would like to clarify what we are trying to accomplish with the Midd-West School District along with all other school districts in the country.

Since Brandon’s death, which he attributed to constant bullying and harassment at school and on the bus, his memorial website has received countless e-mails and posts detailing horrific bullying that is happening not only at Midd-West, but at other schools across the country.

Because our family and those close to Brandon now have to deal with the harsh reality of losing someone so young, promising and kind, we are dedicated to spreading tolerance, bullying awareness and suicide prevention. Until you experience a loss so devastating, you cannot understand how we feel. You may sit there and say “that will never happen to my son/daughter/friend/niece/nephew” but Brandon is proof that it could and may very well happen if the prevalent hate in our society continues on its current path.

Our intent is not to bash the Midd-West School District at their school board meetings. But please, understand that it’s frustrating when other school districts have made valiant efforts to promote togetherness amongst their students and celebrate differences, while Midd-West seems to be turning a blind eye to the situation. The body language and attitude at the school board meetings, when bullying is brought up, is defensive and insensitive.

Hatred and intolerance is a cycle, a cycle that seems to be spinning out of control in our country. Brandon’s family and friends simply want to act as a think tank, a group that will volunteer and share ideas to better improve the educational environment. The rash outbreak of suicides across the country are proof that bullying is out of control and creative actions need to be taken to prevent further tragedies.

Brandon’s mother Tammy and step-father Palmer have hosted several meetings with family, friends and supporters regarding bullying since Brandon’s death. These meetings have generated a plethora of ideas for Midd-West and other school districts that can be used to prevent and combat bullying and harassment. These actions are necessary because the state legislature’s and school district’s bullying policies are vague at best.

THE IDEAS:

• Elect a school anti-bullying/harassment specialist. Students need to have a respected and nonjudgmental adult that they can turn to. This specialist should undergo training on how to deal with bullying, harassment, and intolerance.

• Establish a safe haven for students. Teachers should make extra effort to let their students know that their differences are okay and that if they are having any problems, they can turn to them. Harvey Edwards, a teacher at Selinsgrove High School and the school’s Tolerance Troop leader, is a prime example of this. Every teacher should strive to be as accepting, levelheaded and open as Mr. Edwards. Students at Selinsgrove know that in Mr. Edwards’ room, they area not judged, they are not harassed and they have someone to turn to.

• Ensure that school records are transferred. Brandon’s middle school records of bullying and counseling were not transferred to the high school. Records should be transferred and teachers should review incoming classes so they have an idea of what is going on within the student body. This preventative task will allow teachers to pay special attention to possible problems with students.

• Redefine consequences. Many students find an allure in out of school suspension (OSS), which is sometimes given to students after several cases of bullying, harassment, violence. If a student is punished for bullying/harassment, they should be required to undergo in-school classes educating them about acceptance of others and the consequences of bullying. These types of punishments are much better than assigning OSS so the student can sit at home playing video games and surfing the internet.

• An anonymous tip box. A tip box should be placed in a central area of schools so that bullying/harassment/other issues can be reported anonymously. Usually the bullied and bystanders are afraid to speak up because they are afraid the bullying will get worse. A box like this, monitored by an outside volunteer, is a sure-fire way to monitor the issues inside the school.

• Accept free help. Schools should be willing to accept free help from anti-bullying and other groups promoting tolerance. The only investment is time and if a program will improve the well-being of a student, it’s unquestionably worth it.

• Promote tolerance. Schools should promote tolerance in any way they can, every single day. Students spend nearly half of their awake hours in school or in school-related activities and it’s where they learn the most during their maturing years. Once we groom our youth on accepting differences – no matter race, religion, sexuality, weight, height, etc. – bullying and harassment should naturally decrease.

Prevention, education and tolerance are the key ideas here. If schools continue to conform to the bare minimum, every child is in danger. Sure, maybe a certain child’s issue was dealt with, but what about the child who went unnoticed? This is not an individual problem, it is a societal one, and until we can accept each other for who we are as individuals, bullying and harassment will never stop.

Punk Rock Prom

(Published April 29, 2010 in the Daily Item Applause section, page D3)

The 2nd annual Punk Rock Prom benefiting To Write Love on Her Arms, also known as TWLOHA, will be held at Shikellamy High School this Friday.

Punk Rock Prom was started as a senior project in 2009 by Shikellamy senior Samantha Dailey. Current senior and event organizer Kate Kistler is organizing the event’s second year for her senior project.

Five bands have donated their time to this year’s event. The bands performing will be An Ocean's Farewell, Lights Camera Distraction, Lucas Carpenter, The Groundbreaking Ceremony and Farewell Rescue.

“The [Punk Rock Prom] proceeds go to the To Write Love on Her Arms foundation. The community should come, not just to hear some great music, but also to help support a great cause,” said Kistler.

To Write Love on Her Arms is a non-profit organization which focuses on helping those struggling with thoughts of suicide, depression, self injury and addiction. TWLOHA raises awareness of these issues and connects sufferers with treatment centers and support groups. TWLOHA uses supportive musicians and other entertainers to promote its cause.

"To Write Love On Her Arms is such a noble cause, and The Groundbreaking Ceremony naturally gravitates towards it. The messages of GBC songs such as "Fight To Stay Alive" and "Ride It Out" are very aligned with the ideals of TWLOHA, so we're very honored to be able to give back to this organization through our music," said Chas Myers, guitarist of The Groundbreaking Ceremony.

Northumberland based band, Farewell Rescue, is in its second year of supporting Punk Rock Prom.

“TWLOHA is a great cause because it's so positive. It exists to encourage, inform, inspire. We’ve got a really cool forum as musicians, why not use it to inspire and encourage as well,” said Josh Kerstetter, bassist for Farewell Rescue.

According to Kistler, punk attire is encouraged, but not required to attend the event.

Punk Rock Prom will be held on Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m at Shikellamy High School, Sixth and Walnut Streets, Sunbury. All ages are welcome. Tickets are available before the show for $6 by visiting Josh at the Susquehanna Valley Mall Hot Topic and tickets will be available at the door for $10. Barrack and Juan Carlos Jimenez founded the label after they were introduced while spinning records for WCLH-FM, Wilkes University's radio station in Wilkes Barre.

The label has released several compilation albums and currently has two artists on its roster that have released full length albums. Bee Ez's album was released in December 2008 and Crusafix's album was released in September 2009. A third artist, Rukus, is expected to release an album later this summer.

Artists from Williamsport based Smoked Out Entertainment will also hit the stage. The label was established in 1998 by CEO Anthony Parsons and features artists AP Tha Don (Parsons' stage name) and co-CEO C-Kwal.

"I have always been able to paint a vivid picture so my music is the picture I give to the people," said Parsons.

The goal of Smoked Out Entertainment is to strengthen the underground hip-hop movement in Pa. Parsons believes that Saturday's show will help the independent groups earn more recognition within local communities.

DJ Hersh expressed an interest to Barrack in traveling to Milton for "Saturday Satisfaction." He is a veteran of spinning records in the Northeast Pa. region. He was recently named NEPA's favorite DJ in The Weekender's Readers Choice 2010 poll.

"[Hersh] is extremely familiar with how these local hip-hop showcases go as he's done several shows with us before," said Barrack.

The Susquehanna Valley's own Basement Productions will also perform.

The group, also known as Basement Pro or BP, is a hip-hop movement formed by a unit of longtime friends in the Lewisburg area.

BP's artist roster includes Sammy Hope, Angels, Crypto Creep, Rounds, Ruff Jungle, Relivant and FU.

Crypto Creep, a co-founder of BP, explains that his biggest accomplishment has been evolving as an artist which has helped his vocabulary and confidence. The music has also allowed him to reach out to people that he normally wouldn't associate with.

As for the state of hip-hop in Central Pa. he explains that "rap isn't exactly popular around here, so [BP] had to make it popular."

Sammy Hope, who participated in the 2007 NYC 50 Mics Tournament, a showcase in front of major record labels and a large audience, is also determined to make this area known in the hip-hop scene.

"I want to give back to the community I was born and raised in. People are going to know about the 570 and Basement Pro," said Hope.

Visit http://www.myspace.com/danabesus for more information on Track Masons, http://www.myspace.com/smokedoutentertainment for Smoked Out Entertainment, and http://www.myspace.com/lewiking or http://www.myspace.com/sammyhope570 for Basement Productions.

"Saturday Satisfaction" will be held this Saturday night at Big Andy's, 14 S. Front St., Milton. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. with performances starting at 10 p.m. The show is ages 21+ only and will be $5 at the door with $2 drink specials from 9-11 p.m.

The Badlees Are Back

Published in the Daily Item, April 1, 2010. Promoting the release of their newest record, “Love is Rain,” the band will hit the stage this Saturday at the Front Street Station in Northumberland.

The Badlees’ story began in the late 1980’s when guitarists Bret Alexander and Jeff Feltenberger and drummer Ron Simasek formed the band in Selinsgrove. Vocalist Pete Palladino and bassist Paul Smith were added to the lineup and Feltenberger eventually left the band.
Their first full length album, “Diamonds in the Coal” was released in 1991. The band acquired a following in the area and frequented local venues such as Mike and Dots in Mifflinburg, Bots in Selinsgrove and The Riverside in Danville.

In 1995, the band’s third full length album, “River Songs,” earned them a national recording contract and national hit songs “Angeline is Coming Home” and “Fear of Falling.” During this time, The Badlees toured some of the largest arenas in the nation with acts such as Bob Seger, Plant/Page and Gregg Allman. The band released three more albums in 1999 and 2002 and then took an extended hiatus.

During the hiatus, Alexander and Smith, who began Saturation Acres Recording Studio in 1999, produced many artists, including Breaking Benjamin, who are now a platinum rock band. Palladino and Simasek stayed involved in performing and other side projects.
Fast forward over 7 years and The Badlees are back where it all began with live shows and their new album “Love is Rain,” which was released in October 2009.

“It took a friend of ours to persuade us to make time as a band to get back in the studio and record some music again,” said Smith.

The band became reacquainted during the recording of “Love is Rain.” The album is a step forward for the band and includes several radio-ready gems but also stays true to their roots-rock sound.

“There is a fair amount of familiar sounding stuff on ‘Love Is Rain’ - everybody wants to hear that. But it actually took more of an effort to sound like the old band than the new one. I think this is our best record,” said guitarist and principal songwriter Alexander.

Since their return, The Badlees have been selling out local shows and have also been receiving radio airplay on 94KX and Y106.5. A new generation of Badlees fans is emerging but many fans have stuck with the band since the beginning.

“The last few shows have looked very familiar. There are people that come out now that we recognize and are still right there with us. It's a very cool thing to have people follow the band after so many years,” said Smith.

The Badlees have also added guest musicians to their live shows, including guitarist Aaron Fink of Breaking Benjamin and studio musician Nyke Van Wyk. Fink, who is also from the area, will be performing with the band on Saturday.

Pan.a.ce.a will be opening Saturday’s show with an acoustic set. Alexander produced their latest full length effort, “We The Broken.” The title track off of the album has been receiving radio airplay from local stations 94KX, Y106.5 and WZXR

“We are tight with [Pan.a.ce.a] and love to see them play. It was a natural fit, although a bit unconventional, to have them play some shows with us. They've been playing an acoustic show to open up our shows and our fans as well as theirs have really loved it,” said Smith.

For more information about The Badlees, visit www.badlees.com, and for more information about Pan.a.ce.a, visit www.panacearock.com.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and show time is 8 p.m. on Saturday at the Front Street Station, 2 Front Street, Northumberland. Only a few tickets remain and they can be purchased by visiting www.badlees.net or by calling the promoter, Travis Fisher, at 570-473-3548. Applause section.

The Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble’s Project Discovery program will present matinees of their production of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” to local high school students. The matinees begin on Monday, February 22 at the Alvina Krause Theatre in downtown Bloomsburg.

Project Discovery, which is now in its 17th year, is a partnership between BTE, local businesses and high schools in Columbia, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder and Union counties. All area high school sophomores, juniors and seniors are invited to attend the “Hamlet” matinees at no cost.

Area students from Danville, Selinsgrove, Midd-West, Shamokin, Shikellamy and Warrior high schools will be participating in this year’s Project Discovery. A total of 15 schools and more than 2,400 students will watch BTE’s production of “Hamlet.”

“Hamlet” encourages students to explore themes of revenge, death, uncertainty and loyalty.

“The driving action of the play revolves around whether Hamlet will revenge his father’s murder,” said Nina Winter, BTE’s Education Director.

“Throughout the play, Hamlet is investigating and trying to discover what is certain. When there is opportunity for him to act on his revenge, he contemplates his desire to act and its possible subsequent consequences,” she added.

These themes resonate with high school students because of the close relation to the decisions they have began to make in their own lives. Hamlet’s struggles to weigh actions and consequences as well as determine how strong his loyalty is are similar to decisions made in daily life.

Project Discovery also familiarizes students with the arts as well acquainting them with visiting a theatre.

“We want the students from this rural region to have the same opportunities to experience the arts their peers in cosmopolitan regions have,” said Paula Henry, BTE’s School Programs Director.

The long term goal of Project Discovery is to have a portion of the students’ transition into regular ticket buyers and subscribers of the theatre and the arts.

“Project Discovery builds a community centered on a shared respect for theatre as an engaging means to lifelong learning,” said Henry.

BTE began Project Discovery during the 1993-1994 school year with their production of “Macbeth.” The idea of the program was developed when attempts were made to host field trips at the theatre but many schools’ budgets did not allow for the extra expense.

“In 1993, we started approaching businesses and asking for donations to make free matinees possible for the high school students in the 5 counties covered by Intermediate Unit 16,” said Henry.

Since the start of the program, over 40,000 high school students have experienced live professional theatre performances for free at the Alvina Krause Theatre. According to Henry, an average of 15 high schools participate each year.

“Hamlet” is a co-production between BTE and the BU Players. It is directed by Gerard Stropnicky.

The production is part of Shakespeare for a New Generation, which is a national initiative sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts in cooperation with Arts Midwest.

The Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble is located in The Alvina Krause Theatre at 226 Center Street, Bloomsburg. In addition to the Project Discovery matinees, “Hamlet” performances are available to the general public. Applause section.

Joanne Landis is a fashion illustrator, writer and artist, and occassionally, aspects of those disciplines and interests merge into new art forms.

She is a full-time artist who was born and raised in New York City, but now resides in the Snyder County countryside. She spent many years as a fashion illustrator in New York and taught at the Fashion Institute of Technology as well as at Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Initially, she strived to be a writer, but art quickly became her primary interest. To further her art education, she attended Parsons School of Design in New York City.

“I was going to do art as a sideline project and concentrate on writing short stories, poetry, novels but I got hooked on art. It was something to do as a kid but then I had great teachers when I went to school.”

Her oil paintings will be on display through March at the Cherry Alley Cafe on North Third Street, starting tonight with a launch party from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Hidden in one of those paintings — “The Victorian Garden” — are the words of a poem.

“I repainted [The Victorian Garden] three times,” Landis said. “The third time was when it hooked up with the poem. [The woman] had this sadness about her. I wrote the poem thinking of the painting then I put the poem in the painting,” said Landis.

“When I paint, I try to use my own memories but also try to go back further than myself. And so I paint what I call archetypes or classical people most often from myth or from folklore and try to capture the universal soul,” she added.

Landis does just that in the largest painting on display which is titled “Woman Carrying the Dawn.” The painting is approximately 5 feet by 4 feet in size and was repainted several times before the idea solidified with Landis.

The woman in the painting was originally walking on a mountain range but evolved into the woman being carried away in the water on fish.

Landis explains that “this magical moment was happening like dawn was coming at that moment. There are spirit beings in the background, the moment of dawn – something I saw out in the desert one time. All life greets that moment and that came out at the end of the painting.”

She enjoys being able to display her art in a relaxed atmosphere in here in central Pennsylvania.

“I like showing in alternative spaces like cafes and restaurants where people are more relaxed with the paintings and it’s not so formal,” she said.

In addition to her exhibit at Cherry Alley Café, Landis frequently displays her art at other Pennsylvania locations including Gallery Blu in Harrisburg and The Pajama Factory in Williamsport. She also shows her pieces at Art Haus in San Francisco.

All of the display pieces are for sale, and a price list is available upon request.

The Cherry Alley Café is located at 21 N. 3rd Street, Lewisburg and can be reached by calling (570) 524-1234.

Under the Flood Bio

Draft of the bio I wrote for rock band Under the Flood (www.undertheflood.com).

Amidst the trials and tribulations present in a continuously altered music industry, rock band Under the Flood have managed to stay alive in the fire. The Charlottesville, Va. rockers’ music was once described by Revolver Magazine as “keen melodic interplay” regardless if “they're kickin' it hard or soft.”

Under the Flood is gearing up for the independent release of their sophomore album, “Alive in the Fire.” Their debut album, "The Witness", was released in 2008 on Koch Records and was produced by Brian S. Craddock (Daughtry) and mixed by Skidd Mills (Saving Abel, Saliva).

“Alive in the Fire” tells a story about the band’s uphill struggle and unquestionable perseverance in a radically changing industry environment. The album unveils a more dynamic and darker side of Under the Flood yet still maintains their trademark melodic content and lyrical substance. “It wasn't hard finding inspiration for this record given our experiences over these last few years as a band. Those events really acted as our ammunition. We had a lot to say this time around, we made sure that we said it,” said vocalist Dave Nadolski.

Under the Flood was formed in 2005 by two brothers whose goal was to create an honest sound that would resonate with listeners of all walks of life. That goal was accomplished when the brothers, rhythm guitarist Matt Nadolski and vocalist Dave Nadolski, teamed up with bassist Kenn Davis, lead guitarist Brandon Sidebottom and drummer Russel Lee. Throughout the past five years, the band has undergone a natural progression, not only as a group but more importantly as individuals.

The band has expertly created an online buzz for “Alive in the Fire” through live video chats and streaming rehearsal footage on their official website, www.undertheflood.com. Their high energy live performances, relentless touring and flawless marketing strategies have surely guaranteed them success. Without doubt, Under the Flood has their ability to stay alive in the fire.

Maroon 5 goes 'Back to School' in concert

published in The Daily Item, Thursday, November 12, 2009.

Grammy-award-winning band Maroon 5 is taking a break from working on their new album and will bring their “Back to School” tour to Bucknell University’s Sojka Pavilion on Saturday at 7 p.m.

The band, which consists of vocalist Adam Levine, keyboardist Jesse Carmichael, guitarist James Valentine, bassist Mickey Madden and drummer Matt Flynn, have sold over 25 million records world wide since their debut. They have either won or have been nominated for six Grammy Awards.

Their first album, “Songs about Jane,” was released in 2002 and included hit singles “Harder to Breathe,” “This Love,” “She Will Be Loved,” and “Sunday Morning.”

In 2007, they released their sophomore effort, “It Won’t Be Soon Before Long.” The album featured the number one single “Makes Me Wonder” and the re-release included a duet version of “If I Never See Your Face Again” with Rihanna.

For the “Back to School” tour, the band wanted to return to its beginning. “In the early days, we were in a van and traveled across the country. Back then we did a lot of college shows and it’s like a return to our roots,” said Carmichael.

“The college shows are our favorite shows to play. The kids are just so excited in general, it might be something about how they are out on their own. They really get fired up,” he said.

Rural areas such as the Central Susquehanna Valley are also high on the band’s list. “People in big cities tend to be a bit more jaded. Sometimes we can feel a little more genuine enthusiasm in the rural areas” and “people aren’t as caught up in the ‘too cool for school’ attitude,” said Carmichael.

In conjunction with the “Back to School” tour, Maroon 5 is giving away $15,000 to a college student. To enter, college students are instructed to record themselves singing along to a Maroon 5 song. The band will pick a winner based on energy and enthusiasm. Entries can be submitted at http://www.twitvid.com/maroon5.

The contest is the band’s way of giving back to their fans. “It’s important to us to encourage creativity and to provide some sort of financial reward,” said Carmichael.

The current tour is the band’s refreshing break from the studio. They have been working with producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange at his studio in Switzerland and will return to the studio for an additional two weeks after the tour.

Lange is one of the most successful producers in rock music history and has worked with bands such as Def Leppard, AC/DC and Nickelback.

Working on the new album at Lange’s studio in Switzerland has allowed the band to bond and create music without distractions. Their constant togetherness throughout the past 15 years has strengthened their friendships and honed their musical skills.

Levine, Carmichael and Valentine share the songwriting responsibilities but Maroon 5 has always been open to collaborations. A song on the new album will showcase a collaboration with Natalie Maines of Dixie Chicks fame.

According to Carmichael, the song that was recorded with Maines has a more organic and country feel but it is still pop.

The sound of the new music will return to Maroon 5’s roots but with a twist. “[The new album] definitely sounds like us but it’s like an evolution of us. In a way it’s a return to what we did on our first album,” he said.

“What’s going to happen is the people who love us will love us even more. The people who are on the fence about us will love us and the people who don’t like us will be on the fence,” said Carmichael.

Saturday’s concert will also feature special guest Guster, an alternative rock band that is known for its live performances. Fitz and the Tantrums will open up the show at 7 p.m.

Tickets for the concert are $40 per person, and are available in advance from the Bucknell University campus box office in the Weis Center and the Bookstore in the Elaine Langone Center weekdays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., by calling 570-577-1000 or online at www.bucknell.edu/Boxoffice.xml. Following their signing with management firm Susquehanna Entertainment and the rerelease of their full length debut, the band is preparing to unleash their latest full length effort, "We the Broken," on Oct. 20. The highly anticipated release comes from a band who is known to play "some of the most intense, melodic and gut-driven modern rock," according to Rock on Request magazine.

We the Broken combines Pan.a.ce.a's growth and maturity with major hooks and significant replay value. "There are both musical and lyrical elements within each song that really speak for themselves and bring a lot of color and character to the album as a whole," said vocalist Tim Farley. The album includes 13 tracks and was produced by Bret Alexander, who has worked with bands such as The Badlees and Breaking Benjamin. Three tracks from the album, including the lead single "Too Little Too Late," were co-produced by Breaking Benjamin guitarist Aaron Fink.

The forces behind Pan.a.ce.a are vocalist Tim Farley, drummer Kevin Harry, bassist Matt Jaffin and guitarist Paul Young. Since their previous release, the band has grown exponentially both internally and externally. Undeniably passionate and unquestionably energetic, this quartet's evolving maturity and artistry shine through on We the Broken. Each individual band member has a vested emotional interest in each composition, ensuring that each song is not only played but also felt.

Before signing with management in Oct. 2008, Pan.a.ce.a independently sold over 5,000 CDs and was consistently crowned the number one original rock act in Northeast Pa. They've shared the stage with Alice in Chains, Velvet Revolver, Breaking Benjamin, 10 Years and most recently, Rev Theory and Hinder. Always bringing the rock and ruckus, Pan.a.ce.a "belonged on that stage with [Hinder and Rev Theory] and many people in the audience confirmed that," said Farley.

Coinciding with the release of "We the Broken," Pan.a.ce.a is planning an extensive tour, including radio appearances and retail in-store performances. The hardworking and determined band is already working on songs for their next release.

With a well oiled marketing and promotional machine running smoothly and an enthusiastic fan base, Pan.a.ce.a is sure to deliver an extraordinary musical journey with the upcoming release. According to Farley, the band's bond has never been stronger and they "plan on taking Pan.a.ce.a to the highest level possible and are unwaveringly committed to achieving [their] highest ambitions together."

'Hearth and Harvest' hits home

published in The Daily Item, Thursday, September 24, 2009.

LEWISBURG — The Campus Theatre will kick off its seventh annual Documentary Film Festival with a documentary that has strong ties to the local community.

“Hearth and Harvest,” a documentary by WVIA, will have its world premiere and serve as the festival’s opening film on Friday at 8 p.m. The theater is located on Market Street in downtown Lewisburg.

The documentary showcases a year in the lives of Pennsylvania farmers. The film begins with the Farm Show in Harrisburg, which is held in January, and concludes with the end of harvest season.

The film explores the history and heritage of Pennsylvania farmers as well as the issues and challenges they currently face.

Mary Bannon, executive director of the Campus Theatre, said the theater chose “Hearth and Harvest” to kick off the 2009 Documentary Festival because “it’s such an important film for our community.”

Today, there are almost 60,000 farms in Pennsylvania, occupying a quarter of the state’s 28 million acres. Agribusiness is a $45 billion dollar industry, employing more than 2 million people. Ten percent of that revenue comes directly from agriculture. The state ranks fourth in the nation in dairy production, first in mushroom production, hardwood production and Christmas tree farms, and is in the top 10 in the production of four vegetables — pumpkins, sweet corn, snap beans and cantaloupe.

“We live in a farming region, yet many of us don’t understand all of the intricacies of agriculture. This documentary clearly explains what farming is like in this region and does it through the voices of farmers in an enlightening and entertaining way,” Bannon said.

Award-winning director Gregory Matkosky directed the film. He will be in attendance for the premiere and will hold a question and answer session to kick off the film festival.

Matkosky, a 1982 graduate of Penn State University, received his masters of fine arts in cinematography from AFI in 1986. He has directed, produced, photographed and written several public television documentary films for WVIA.

In addition to “Hearth and Home,” the Campus Theatre will present 10 other films during the annual film festival.

“Every year, we strive to bring the most interesting, exciting and provocative documentaries, and this year is no exception,” Bannon said.

Films include “Food Inc.,” which reveals shocking truths about the food industry; “Under Our Skin,” which is a groundbreaking investigation of Lyme’s disease; and one of Bannon’s favorites, “Herb and Dorothy,” which is an amusing story about how a postal clerk and librarian grew an incredible art collection.

The theater is highlighting documentary films because “big Hollywood films make up about 10 percent of the films that are released and, yet, that’s all you’re ever able to see. The Campus Theatre is dedicated to bringing in quality films that not only challenge and stimulate, but entertain as well,” Bannon said.

The documentary film festival begins on Friday with the 8 p.m. showing of “Hearth and Harvest” and runs until Oct. 1. People long for the ability to travel the world and spend long nights and days with rock stars.

It’s a position that seems to cry sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, but when it’s examined on a deeper level, there’s much more to the profession than late night partying and hooking up.

The [not so] glamorous life
Becky Hunt is a tour manager and is living the dream. She’s a tour manager and artist representative for several established and up and coming bands. A quick glance reveals a platinum blond woman with rock star style who exudes the glamour of being out on the road.

But with what may be a disappointment to many, Hunt explained that “there's nothing glamorous about being a tour manager, especially when you are wondering when and where your next shower will be.”

She continued, “I must say it is the hardest thing I have ever done. 20-21 hour days every day for 6 or more weeks is extremely difficult.”

Hunt, in addition to being the current tour manager for rock bands Nonpoint and The Exies, coordinates her tour schedule with her full time job. She’s been a flight attendant for over 21 years and uses accumulated vacation time and tedious planning so she is able to work both jobs.

Life on the road
Hunt first got the idea of becoming a tour manager after she worked as an artist representative with several different companies in the music industry.

“Several bands told me I would make a great tour manager. The Exies hired me and here I am,” she explained.

As a tour manager, Hunt is responsible for the band’s daily activities and business transactions while out on the road.

Her typical day includes duties such as ensuring the band is paid by venues and promoters, organizing the band’s daily itineraries, setting up radio interviews, conducting contests and giveaways, coordinating meet and greets and selling merchandise.

Scott Stevens, vocalist and guitarist for The Exies believes that Hunt is “like an American Express card... you don’t leave home without her.”

Hunt’s years of experience as a flight attendant and tending to first class customers has influenced how she does business for the bands she managing on tour.

“I go the extra mile for each of my band members as I would my first class customers. I like to call it a tour manager with a personal assistant twist. I am there to make their lives as easy and comfortable as possible,” said Hunt.

To avert crisis on the road, Hunt needs the right fuel. She explained that she is “usually the only crisis with in the band. This happens on a daily basis if I don't get my StarCrack coffee shortly after waking up. I call it my personality in a cup”

Even with Hunt’s coffee power, traveling thousands of miles in unknown territory with a van full of band members and a trailer of equipment, sometimes a crisis cannot be avoided and stressful situations arise.

Hunt recalls one of her most memorable and stressful situations on the road happened while traveling through the most western part of Texas with The Exies.

“There is absolutely nothing out there in the form of civilization, no cell signals and most importantly no gas stations,” she explained.

The van was running short on fuel as they approached a single lane bridge. As if on cue, the van started sputtering and sending out warning signals not long after they drove onto the bridge.

“We were screwed but somehow we coasted off that bridge and there was a closed gas station on the left. Thank God we had a credit card to use at the pump! We never let the gas tank get below the half way mark ever again. It wasn't funny then but we laugh our asses off about it now,” said Hunt.

The sacrifice
Personal sacrifice is the name of the game when it comes to Hunt’s jobs, both of which require extensive travel and time away from home.

“I have no ‘personal’ life. I own a house in Charlotte, N.C. that is currently for sale. If I'm lucky, I'm home 2, maybe 3 nights a month. [I’m] 42 years old [and have] never been married [and I have] no kids,” explained Hunt.

Although she doesn’t have her own family in the traditional sense of the word, this lifestyle works for Hunt, even with its long hours and daily sacrifices.

“My life is my bands. They are ‘my kids’ and as long as they are happy, I'm happy. My suitcase is my constant companion and my best friend. I feel like I'm the luckiest person in the world. I have not one but two jobs that I love. How many people can say that?” she said.

She believes that “you only have one shot at this life. It's okay to march to your own drum and chase your dreams. If you don't, you'll never know what could have been.”

A Farewell Rescue

published in The Daily Item, www.dailyitem.com, on Thursday September 3, 2009. Pages D1 & D2.

Northumberland rock band A Farewell Rescue is starting on the road to success.

A Farewell Rescue won the 2009 Hot Topic Band Grant contest, is planning the release of a new album and is opening for national act Cartel in Pottsville on Labor Day.

The band, composed of Northumberland residents Joey Heid, vocals; John Peifer, guitars and vocals; Max Keely, guitar; Josh Kerstetter, bass; and Jordan Rhoades, drums, was recently awarded a $1,000 grant from retail store Hot Topic.

Kerstetter is an employee of Hot Topic at the Susquehanna Valley Mall. He explained that “the Hot Topic Band Grant is an annual contest to find the best bands (that) have members working at Hot Topic. ... It’s a nationwide contest, and thousands of bands enter.”

Kerstetter submitted an entry for A Farewell Rescue, which included one song and a two-page essay stating what music meant to the band.

Judges selected by Hot Topic narrowed down the entries to 12 finalists and then “voting is opened up company-wide, and all employees must check out each band and cast their vote,” Kerstetter said.

The band was selected as one of this year’s winners and received the $1,000 grant, and their debut album, “Never Meet Your Heroes,” which is licensed by Snapdragon Records/MRI with Sony Red Distribution, was added to Playnetwork.

Kerstetter said, “Playnetwork handles the music for most retail chains throughout the USA. ... It has helped us get more recognition nationally.”

The $1,000 grant will be used to release an independent digital album in October. The album, which is currently untitled, will include new music.

The new music is “heavier, yet still remains catchy and hook laden. ... (It) is more mature and has a better flow,” Kerstetter said.

The digital album will include songs recorded with Doug White at Watchmen Studios in Lockport, N.Y. In addition to his work with A Farewell Rescue, White has worked with platinum recording artists Gym Class Heroes on their album “As Cruel as School Children.”

Coming to New Berlin
Later this month, on Sept. 25, AFR will be playing at “one of the biggest DIY shows this area has seen in years,” according to Kersetter.

The show is at the New Berlin Legion and includes other bands such as The Wonder Years, Energy, A Loss for Wars and Tugga War. Showtime is 5 p.m. and entry is $10.

In January 2005, when other bands broke up, A Farewell Rescue was formed. “Our goal was to be a high-energy, all-original rock band. … And of course (we wanted to) tour the country,” Kerstetter said.

The band has played more than 300 shows, has been on three national tours and has shared the stage with bands such as Rise Against, Mae, Yellowcard, August Burns Red, and Coheed & Cambria.

Local support in central Pennsylvania for the band has grown.

“We’ve gained a lot of local support as the popularity of our album and band has grown. ... Often times, local, all-original bands aren’t taken seriously,” said Kerstetter. “We tried to make ourselves known elsewhere first, which has given us credibility locally.”

After these local shows, the band “plans to tour the south in the winter in support of the new EP, and our main goal is to write a new full-length album and support it with national tours upon release,” said Kerstetter.

“Never Meet Your Heroes,” the band’s first full length album, was released in July 2007, and is available at most digital retailers and national retail stores. A music video was released for the song “Pretty Cut and Dry” and can be viewed along with other information about the band at www.myspace.com/afarewellrescue.

Breaking Benjamin back in the limelight

published in The Daily Item, www.dailyitem.com, Thursday, August 27, 2009. The band also features bassist Mark James and drummer Chad Szeliga, who both also reside in Pennsylvania.

The band streamed their long-awaited new single, “I Will Not Bow,” exclusively on MySpace on Aug. 11.

By early last week, the song had already received more than 181,000 plays on MySpace and has been played on several radio stations across the country with most stations adding it into rotation last week, according to the official Breaking Benjamin MySpace blog.

“I Will Not Bow” will be available for purchase on Sept. 1 on iTunes and will also be on the soundtrack for the new Disney movie “Surrogates,” which stars Bruce Willis and hits theaters Sept. 25. It will be featured in the movie’s trailers and will be played in full during the end credits on the big screen.

The song was not written specifically for the movie, but according to Szeliga, “Ben sent a few songs to our record label, Hollywood Records,” which is owned by Disney, who then decided they “wanted a Breaking Benjamin song for this movie.”

Two music videos are in production for “I Will Not Bow.” The band filmed their portion of the videos in New York City. Szeliga explained that “one video is going to be the band only and the second video is going be us and 20 percent of the movie.” It was released Aug. 21 on MySpace.com/breakingbenjamin.

The band is also in the studio recording the follow-up album to 2006’s platinum album “Phobia.” The album will be titled “Dear Agony” and according to the band’s MySpace, will be released on Sept. 29.

In addition to “I Will Not Bow” there will be 10 other songs on “Dear Agony.” The songs were primarily written by Burnley.

“Ben wrote the majority of the album but Jasen Rauch from (the band) Red helped write four songs,” Szeliga said.

David Bendeth is producing “Dear Agony.” He produced the band’s previous two albums, “We Are Not Alone” and “Phobia,” which both went platinum.

Bendeth described the feel of the album compared to their last release, “Phobia,” on the band’s official internet message board at www.ShallowBay.com. He explained that the “musical style is tighter, harder, more melodic and darker. (The) attitude is hungrier, more serious, natural, simpler and confident.”

When asked why Breaking Benjamin keeps returning to Bendeth’s House of Loud recording studio, Szeliga said the band “looks at it as an ‘if it’s not broken, don’t fix it’ kind of thing. We went platinum twice so I guess it doesn’t hurt to have [Bendeth] do it again.

“We have a family-based environment with the producer and engineers (at Bendeth’s House of Loud),” he added.

Recording for “Dear Agony” is wrapping up (the band’s deadline from the label was Aug. 20, according to Szeliga).

Bendeth announced early last week on the official message board that “mixing (is) in progress (and a) track listing (is) coming shortly from label.”

Along with new music comes a chance to see Breaking Benjamin live. They have not played a live show since their York Fair concert with Seether last September.

There are plans to do a “couple of shows in September or October, [with shows] a little close by (to Pennsylvania),” said Szeliga.

The band is also “talking about doing some big radio festivals and then really (touring) hard in 2010,” he added.

Quilts: A study in genealogy

published in The Daily Item, www.dailyitem.com, Thursday, August 6, 2009. Pages D1 & D2.

The Packwood House Museum, 15 N. Water St., Lewisburg, is sponsoring a three-day Quilt Weekend Aug. 21-23.

The event, along with the museum’s current quilt exhibit “Pennsylvania Quilts: Studies in Color,” on display through Oct. 24, looks to showcase the area’s past in regard to special events, culture and heritage.

One of the museum’s strongest links to the past is a quilt that was brought into the public eye earlier this year. The quilt, likely from the 19th century, is on display at the museum and features 312 names.

After these names were revealed in The Daily Item in May, quilt exhibit co-chair Ruth Burnham, of Lewisburg, was contacted by several people and stories about those listed on the quilt have begun to emerge. Any information helps in determining when the quilt was created.

“A woman in Mifflinburg sent me some important genealogical information. She listed five members of one family, and (for) the youngest of them, she gave me a birth date, so we know the quilt could not have been made before that date,” Burnham said.

Searching for knowledge

In addition to people sharing stories about the names on the quilt, others are reaching out to the museum for information about their own family histories.

“I got a call from a man in Pittsburgh whose name is Harold Donachy IV. The name Harold Donachy appears on the quilt twice — we don’t know if this was a mistake or father (and) son. But Donachy IV called asking me if I had any genealogical information on the Donachys mentioned on the quilt,” Burnham said.

The quilt also links the past and present. When Burnham researched the name Mrs. F. Donehower, she discovered the Donehowers “were merchants and had been merchants in Lewisburg (for) 130 years … not always the same kind, but still merchants.”

The Donehower name written on the quilt could be a part of the three generations of Donehowers who previously operated W.L. Donehower, a store on Market Street in Lewisburg, for 132 years.

Although the exact meaning and special event surrounding the creation of this quilt has yet to be discovered, Burnham has speculated the quilt dates to about 1900 because “1885 was the centennial of Lewisburg’s founding and (it) could have been made around that occasion. Or maybe it was a turn-of-the-century quilt. When things settle down, we are going to try to do some more in-depth research.”

The quilt exhibit

“When the Pennsylvania Germans immigrated here, they did not make quilts. They used woven coverlets, but they saw their English neighbors quilting, and they were influenced by that,” Burnham said.

Both the Pennsylvania English and German quilt makers had their own sense of style and taste of colors. According to Burnham, the English preferred using blue and the Germans “brought an emphasis on color ... a brighter, more vibrant color scheme.” A German quilt of pink and green and an English quilt with blue and white are displayed side-by-side in the exhibit, illustrating the similarities and differences in the two styles.

Another quilt on display may represent the quilt maker’s economic situation or a special time in their life. The quilt is made out of reds, yellows, greens and purples, but the colors are not distributed equally or symmetrically.

The purple appears heavily in the bottom corners of the quilt but isn’t as evident in the upper corners. This could possibly mean that the quilt maker ran out of resources to purchase the purple fabric or the purple patches may symbolize a person, place or thing, Burnham said.

The unevenness of the purple patch is one of the many mysteries a quilt can disguise which can only be discovered through study and public participation.

“We would like people to come and tell us about our quilts,” Burnham said.

DJ brings Latin Night to skating rink

published in the Daily Item, www.dailyitem.com, Thursday, July 23 2009. Pages D1 & D2.

In an effort to increase cultural awareness in the Central Susquehanna Valley, a Latin Night is being held 8-10:30 p.m. Friday at Sunset Skating Rink, Routes 11/15, Shamokin Dam.

Event host and organizer is Jose Rivera, 33, also known as DJ Cameo, of Selinsgrove, who deejays Latin Night as well his weekly Latin radio show Pulso Latino (“Latin Pulse”). The program airs Sunday afternoons during the summer from 2-6 p.m. and Sunday evenings during the fall from 5-6 p.m. on 88.9 FM WQSU.

This week’s Latin Night will be the second in what Rivera plans to be a monthly event, held the last Friday of each month, and everyone is encouraged to attend.

Admission is $5 per person. Roller skates are available to rent at an additional cost but, according to Rivera, the ability to skate is not needed to enjoy the evening.

“People don’t just go [to Latin Night] to skate. They can dance, play pool, have a snack, all while relaxing and listening to a different style of music,” Rivera said.

The first Latin Night went well but Rivera believes there is a lot of room for growth. He is already making plans for future Latin Nights, which may include “contests for various activities such as who can skate the fastest, who can dance the best or who knows the words of a particular song.”

Styles of Latin music featured at both Latin Night and on Pulso Latino include bachata, merengue, salsa, cumbia, musica Cristiana (Spanish Christian music), mariachi, reggeaton and baladas. Among the popular artists played are Marc Anthony and reggae musician Sean Paul, both of whom have had several mainstream radio hits over the past several years.

Rivera lives by the motto “unidos podemos” — “united we can” — and his Latin Night and Pulso Latino program are aimed at uniting Hispanics and other members of the community to ensure a more “culturally diverse, culturally educated and culturally liberated central Pennsylvania.”

However, these activities are “not only for Hispanics in our community, but for even those who do not know Spanish,” he said. Sometimes “people have resistance to opening themselves up to something new, which is normal,” but “once people understand our culture and our music, they will accept it.”

He hopes people will “get to know us by who we are inside, and not judge us by our exterior, or what they have heard through the grapevine.”

Rivera was born and raised in Puerto Rico and moved to New York City in 2003. In 2005, Rivera and his wife, Marie, relocated to central Pennsylvania. He previously worked with the coordinators of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade of New York City and with musical artists such as Sean Paul, Daddy Yankee, and Exclusive, a Christian hip hop artist from Reading.

For more information, contact Rivera at djcameopro@gmail.com.

Exhibit Winners Named

published in The Daily Item, www.dailyitem.com, Thursday, July 16, 2009. Pages D1 & D2

The Susquehanna Art Society awarded cash prizes, honorable mentions and certificates of merit to several artists at its 2009 Art Exhibit awards reception on July 9.

This is approximately the 30th year of the annual juried art exhibit and awards reception, according to Susquehanna Art Society president Rodney Ries. It was previously held at Selinsgrove Area High School but has since switched venues to the community room in the Degenstein library, 40 S. Fifth St., Sunbury.

Ries explained that because of renovation construction at the high school, the Degenstein Library was used in 2008 and consequently invited the art society and exhibit back to its community room this year.

The 2009 art exhibit commands 314 pieces of art in various categories which were submitted by 134 artists. Of these 134 artists, 131 are Central Susquehanna Valley residents.

Artists were required to submit a $5 entry fee per piece and $2,000 in cash prizes were handed out.

This year’s exhibit had the “most entries ever received,” Ries said. It was juried by Brian Keeler of Wyalusing. Keeler is a graduate of the York Academy of Art and boasts a career in art for over 30 years. He involves himself in many local art projects and founded the Blue Heron Gallery in Wyalusing.

Keeler examined each entry and selected the show’s winners in the student/beginner, intermediate and advanced skill levels. Each skill level included categories such as drawing, opaque painting, pastels, photography, oil, pencil, watercolor and mixed media.

“I found some truly wonderful pieces in the show that I connected with immediately by artists whom I did not know of previously,” Keeler said.

Speaking about his experience as the exhibit’s juror, Keeler explained that “the high level of skill and beauty of conception and articulation on a few of my favorites allowed for a rewarding process.” Forty-five awards were announced during the reception, including certifications of merit, first and second place, and honorable mentions. Local residents made up 43 of the winners. In addition to the cash prizes, winners were given award certificates and ribbons.

The art exhibit brought out artists of all ages and backgrounds. Mariana Arnabar, of Danville, entered the exhibit and won a certificate of merit in the Student/Beginner Oil category for the piece “Self-Portrait.” Arnabar is only 6 years old.

Ruth Lundberg, a Selinsgrove resident and a first place winner in the Advanced Drawing and Advanced Pastels categories, has entered the Susquehanna Art Society show every year since 1994, when she retired from her full time job. Lundberg described the reception as “really nice … lots of people came.” The art exhibit and awards reception rely heavily on volunteers and donations. The ongoing support of residents and businesses in the Central Susquehanna Valley have made it a continued success.

The art exhibit is open to the public during regular Degenstein Library hours through Saturday. The public is encouraged to visit the exhibit and vote on the Popular Choice of Show award, an award and cash prize given to two artists with the most popular pieces. Ballots are available at the reception table.

Many pieces in the art exhibit are also available for purchase from the artists and most prices are listed in the art exhibit’s list of entries.

The Susquehanna Art Society intends “to bring exciting and challenging contemporary art to our members and to the communities and donors that support us” with its annual art show.

The society has over 100 members and holds meetings throughout the Central Susquehanna Valley. Past meetings have been held at Susquehanna University’s art gallery and many local artists’ studios. Correspondence can be addressed to Susquehanna Art Society, P.O. Nonpoint, an explosive and angst driven hard rock quartet from Fort Lauderdale, FL., have honed and perfected these survival skills. With over 10 years of successes and downfalls, Nonpoint recently separated from their founding guitarist and departed from their record label and management. Seamlessly adjusting to major change, Nonpoint is moving forward with new music, an adjusted attitude, an innovative state of mind and fresh surroundings.

One of the notable bands to break through the South Florida metal scene of the late 1990’s, Nonpoint was formed in January of 1998. The original lineup boasted vocalist Elias Soriano, drummer Robb Rivera, bassist Kenneth “Bastard” Charman and guitarist Andrew Goldman. In September 2008, Goldman left the lineup and Nonpoint announced they would start touring with former Modern Day Zero guitarist Zach Broderick in October.

After formation, Nonpoint swiftly moved forward and released their major label debut, “Statement” on October 10, 2000, on MCA Records. The first single, “What a Day,” reached #24 on the Mainstream Rock charts. In June 2002, their second album, “Development” was released and entered the Billboard album charts at #52 along with the single, “Your Signs,” peaking at #36 on the Mainstream Rock charts.

Nonpoint moved to Lava Records and released “Recoil” in August 2004. The first single, “The Truth,” peaked at #22 on the Mainstream Rock charts.

Nonpoint made the switch to independent label Bieler Bros. Records and released the album “To The Pain” in November 2005. They released two singles from the album which both made appearances on the Mainstream Rock charts. During this time, their cover of Phil Colins’ “In the Air Tonight,” which appeared on the Recoil album, also appeared on the Mainstream Rock charts and was selected as the theme song for the film Miami Vice. In 2007, Nonpoint released the album “Vengence” on Bieler Bros. Records and the single “March of War” hit rock radio. In January 2009, Nonpoint announced its departure from Bieler Bros. Records.

Known as one of the most powerful, chaotic and brutal bands to destroy a rock stage, Nonpoint has an extensive tour history and a solid reputation. While on tour in 2007, vocalist Soriano broke his ankle during the first song of a set. In true survivor mode, Soriano finished the remaining four songs in the set and even played a show the next day. They have toured with major music heavyweights such as Mudvayne, Sevendust, Skindred, Disturbed, and Buckcherry. In 2009 they hit the road with 12 Stones and Anew Revolution on the “What Does Not Kill You” tour.

The band began the process of writing and recording a new album in May 2009. The have recorded a few songs in a different studio and Rivera describes it as a “different atmosphere” and explains that it’s “never a mistake to go to new surroundings.” Their music has been taken to another level and Rivera explains that “it’s the little things that are making these songs have a new life.”

Perseverance, determination and inspiration have carried Nonpoint through the storm of losing their founding guitarist, record label and management. New music is expected to be released in early 2010.

Anticipation Grows for New OurAfter

Combine soothing but sometimes edgy vocals, superior live shows, meaningful lyrics and an amiable relationship with fans…the finished product: OurAfter, an alternative rock band from Scranton, Pa.

While still riding the momentum from their successful debut album, Perfect Day, which was released in 2006, OurAfter has mastered and meshed important ingredients together to become a staple in Northeast Pa.’s thriving music scene.

John Phillips (vocals, rhythm guitar, keys), Jason Macheska (bass), Mike Dudley (lead and rhythm guitar), Steve Husted (lead and rhythm guitar, vocals) and Ed Hludzik (drums and percussion) have combined their musical talents to create an authentic sound which does not conform to typical rock ‘n roll boundaries. Although experimental and original, their music still satisfies fans of mainstream rock.

OurAfter is preparing to enter the studio to record their second album, titled “Tabula Rasa,” which means “clean slate.” Phillips explains that this upcoming release has “gone a little darker…it is a little angrier than the last album due to some life experiences both personal and global. We have a lot to say and hope that fans and future fans relate.”

“Tabula Rasa” is due to hit the streets in October and anticipation for the album is already building. The band wholeheartedly believes in their project and will be financing the project personally. According to Phillips, “it is an exciting time to be an independent artist because the world is at your fingertips with the power of the internet and media.”

Although releasing and selling albums is vital to keeping a band or artist afloat, live shows and exceptional stage presence keep fans coming back for more. OurAfter have proven time and time again that they have what it takes to put on an enjoyable live rock show. They have opened for many national acts, including Flyleaf, 10 Years, Red, The Exies, Yellowcard and Smile Empty Soul. They frequent venues such as The Sterling Hotel (Allentown), Crocodile Rock Café (Allentown), Tinks (Scranton) and The Chameleon Club (Lancaster).

After the release of “Tabula Rasa,” OurAfter plans to tour the United States extensively. However, they will not be touring in the traditional sense. “We will tour a week every month in different areas of the country and do maybe three weeks out towards March or April,” explains Phillips. Touring nationally will give them an opportunity to build a national fan base.

Even though they are expanding across the country, gaining recognition regionally for their musical endeavors is a huge success story in itself. In Phillip’s opinion OurAfter has already “hit it big.” He explains that they “have a good name for ourselves in a regional area, we have touched people’s lives, and we have created something that we hope has made a positive impact.” And the only difference between OurAfter and a band who has sold millions of records? “The size of the impact, not the actual concept.”

Success and national recognition are definitely in the cards for OurAfter. But whatever the future may hold, Northeast and Central Pa. won’t be forgotten. Phillips insists that “staying true to our roots is a necessity. You should never forget where it is that you came from, because it is what has made you into who you are.”

OurAfter’s upcoming album, “Tabula Rasa,” can be preordered in several different packages on their official website at www.ourafter.com. And this wasn’t just any rock show – it showcased three popular bands from Northeast Pa.: the newly signed Drama Club along with opening acts Ashfall and Ajar.

I posted flyers, promoted on the internet, informed family, friends, and friends of friends to build excitement for this spectacular show, only to be disappointed and heart broken when hardly anyone showed up. Those few friends, family and new fans that did show up to support local original music witnessed one heck of a show.

This has not been the only show I’ve been to this year in the central Susquehanna Valley that hasn’t had more than a mediocre turnout. This shows a lack of support for original music in this area. The Drama Club may not have had a number one hit yet but that is no reason not to come see what they, or any other artist, have to offer. I’ve seen them and other bands in the Northeast Pa. area and the venues were so full I could barely even navigate through the crowd!

This all leads me to the issue at hand: Do we want Central Pa. to be looked upon as a dry and boring area to play? Or do we want to be respected as open-minded supporters of new and local original music? Do we want to be always complaining how there is “nothing to do” in this area or do we want to have fairly cheap quality entertainment close to home?

Supporting local music is cheaper, much more intimate and fulfilling. Put your judgments aside and try something new. I am calling on all of Central Pa. to make this an area for local bands and artists to showcase their music. The venues and bars in this area have welcomed numerous bands and artists of all genres with open arms, but will you?

Hollywood or Bust!

published in Shinbone Magazine, September 2008, http://www.shinbone.net/

Count to zero… revert back to where you came from: original modern rock roots and individual influences. Stand up to the pressure: it’s time to record your highly anticipated fifth album in Hollywood. This album could catapult you into a worldwide success. Factor in an endless and grueling national touring schedule and you’ve only just begun to experience the never-ending journey of the Central Pa. based rock band the Poptart Monkeys (PTM).

PTM’s current line up represents Pa. in a big way: Tyson Clark (vocals) reigns from Selinsgrove, Matt Lytkowski (lead guitarist/vocals) is from West Chester, Chris Kurtz (rhythm guitar/vocals) hails from Hazleton, Jason Massey (drums) comes from Philadelphia and Jamah Terry (bass) grew up in Evansville, In. but now lives in Lewisburg. Although the current line up has only been together five months, Clark says “we finally have the lineup that is needed to put the balls back into PTM.”

Still riding on the success of their single “Valerie,” which received radio airplay and had a video featured on MTV and Fuse, PTM recently left Pa. to record the follow up to their 2005 album “Happily Never After” in Hollywood.

The writing process began for the fifth album about a year and a half ago when drummer Jason Massey joined the band. Clark explains that they have reversed the process for the fifth album: “We’ve been writing and rehearsing until we felt we were really ready for the studio. In the past, we were always booking studio time, then crunching to write material.” Clark and Lytkowski were the main songwriters and then brought the song to the band as a whole and “bounced ideas off of each other.” Clark believes this is the “true art of music.”

This time around, PTM was prepared and ready for the studio. They headed to Hollywood on June 29, right after stepping off stage at a show with over 2,500 people in attendance. Arriving in Hollywood armed with 26 possible tracks, PTM narrowed the list down to ten. PTM worked with producer John Ryan, who has worked with Styx, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Dave Matthews Band, and The Doobie Brothers.

Setting aside their reputation for power pop and punk tracks, PTM has taken a new direction for this album: modern rock. This new direction is a positive and satisfying experience for the band as a whole. It’s so good that Clark can honestly say he’s never gotten chills during a playback for a track - until now. He says “this time, I had chills up and down my arms. Hell, I think I even got chills on my eyeballs!”

Clark exclusively revealed the fifth album’s title to Shinbone: “Count to Zero.” The meaning of the title is “wiping the slate clean and coming out with a new, bigger sound and energy.” The first single will be “Choke Yourself,” which according to Clark “is becoming a crowd favorite already.”

“Count to Zero” is in the final stages of mixing and mastering and is expected to be released on Chicago Kid Records in October. With rumors flying around about a major record deal, Clark explains that “I had the opportunity to sit down with an A&R executive at a major company… and both the rep and I were impressed with each other and the music the band has to offer.” However, a major deal is something for the future and is “something that we’ll have to make a decision on if it is presented to us.”

For the launch of “Count to Zero,” PTM plans to host several CD Release shows in many different states. Usually bands only hold one CD release show, but PTM wants to “honor all of our fans, in all regions and areas with releases and parties.” They are even planning an all age acoustic show right here in Pa. so that younger fans can enjoy and experience the new music.

Starting over, regressing, and returning to their rock roots may help PTM dive into national success. Does this mean forgetting about their hometown Pa. fans? No, according to Clark: “Our local fans are the ones who have been supporting the band from the start, paying covers, buying merchandise and spreading the word.”For more information on PTM and to listen to the track “Hometown” from their upcoming album, visit their My Space at www.myspace.com/poptartmonkeys.

MMC 13

published in Shinbone Magazine, February 2009, http://www.shinbone.net/

One of the most highly anticipated events for both local and national bands and music industry professionals will be returning for its 13th run in the Harrisburg area this February.

The 13th annual Millennium Music Conference and Showcase (MMC) will “rock the recession” February 12th through the 15th, and will be hosted at the Radisson Penn Harris Hotel & Conference Center in Camp Hill.

MMC includes two days of music business keynotes, panels, clinics, and workshops. A trade show will also be held at the Radisson each day of the conference.

Showcase performances by over 300 bands and artists from around the nation will be featured over four nights at 30 different venues in and around the Harrisburg area. Showcases are open to the public.

Held in their own backyard, many Pa. bands and artists plan to attend the conference and perform at showcases during MMC.

Who is Attending?
Shoot the Moon, from the Wilkes Barre/Scranton area, who have been acquiring quite a following, will be performing a showcase set on February 13th at Tubby’s Night Club in Duncannon.
Lakeherst, from the Harrisburg area, will be participating in the conference. They have said that “it’s good to see original music coming to the area, and better yet, people actually supporting it.” However, as well as the conference and showcases may go “the trick is to try and carry on the momentum after the conference is finished.” Their showcase is at Double K’s in Harrisburg on February 14th.

Waysted Silence, another band from the Harrisburg area, will be attending MMC and performing at Johnny Joes in Mechanicsburg on February 13th. They believe MMC is a “great experience and a great chance to meet some people in the industry.”

Faith in Exile, from Pottsville, will be attending MMC for the second year in a row. They will also be performing a showcase set at Rumors in Enola on February 13th.

Rob Allison, vocalist, said “the conference itself is a great educational experience and networking opportunity.” He added that “any band will gain a wealth of information about every aspect of the music industry.”

Last year, Allison and his band walked away with more ideas about promotion and “made a lot of friends with bands and musicians who attended.” They “hope to have the same experience this year.”

Evelyn’s Ashes, who won the 105.7 The X’s “Capital City Clash” at Harrisburg’s American MusicFest this past summer, will be attending the conference for their second year. Wes Myers, vocalist, explains that the band hopes to “spread [their] music to new people that haven’t heard us before and to sell more copies of our album ‘Far Away’ and merch.”

Many bands will go to extreme lengths to attend MMC. 39 Goodbyes, from Lehigh Valley, have attended the conference 1.5 times. Vocalist Billy Voight explains that the “.5 stands for February 2007 when we tried to make it through a fierce snow storm, and half of the band left and got stuck on closed down Rt. 78.”

39 Goodbyes will be attending this year, hopefully without any snow storm incidents, and will be performing a showcase set at Double K’s on February 14th.

According to Voight, the band plans to “walk away meeting new people, seeing and hearing great new bands and getting new ideas for our own music career, party hard and then get really lost as always trying to leave Harrisburg.”

Under the Radar Stage
105.7 X will present an “Under the Radar” program to kick off the conference at the Radisson on February 12th. Up and coming bands will be featured on the 1800 Tequila and Three Olives Vodka stages.

Opening up the “Under the Radar” segment of the conference will be Odd Thomas, from South Central Pa. Odd Thomas has played at MMC once before and all members have played there before in previous bands. Their set will begin at 8:00 PM.

Odd Thomas believes MMC is “a great experience if you take advantage of it. Network with the bands. Talk to the professionals. Get yourself seen as much as possible.” They also look forward to “new fans, new friends and new opportunities.”

OurAfter, another popular Pa. band, will also be featured on the “Under the Radar” stage the same night at 10:30 PM.

John Phillips, vocalist for OurAfter, explains that MMC is a useful experience “if you are a band that takes things seriously and want to go out and network, make contacts, put on a good show, and expand in your markets.”

OurAfter attended MMC last year, but only the performance aspect. In Phillips’ opinion, the performances only account for 20% of the MMC experience. “The music business has many facets that make it work the way it does,” and MMC provides bands with a wealth of knowledge in all of these aspects.

Kingsfoil, from York, will also perform for 105.7 X’s “Under the Radar” program. Jordan Davis, vocalist, said that this is the second time the band has attended the conference.

Davis said that MMC is a great tool to have “a better understanding of the state of the music business and an idea of how other bands are responding and managing the business of being in a band.”

Who Can't Make It
Unfortunately, White Witch, from Williamsport will not be attending the conference or performing at a showcase event. According to “Uncle” Jeff Pittinger, a member of the band is fighting an illness but also says that MMC is alright “if you want to meet new friends… but 99.9% of the time nothing major will come from being there.”

Another Pennsylvania favorite, Emily’s Toybox, will not be attending the conference because they were “already booked those nights,” according to Mike Wise, vocalist.

Zelazowa, who have attended MMC three times, will not be participating this year because they will be on tour. However, according to Kyle, guitarist, the conference can be a useful experience “depending on how active the band is.”

Xhibition, from Lancaster, “do not have any plans to go to MMC” according to Don Hosler, drums.

Xhibition currently does “not have a full band. Right now it’s just a CD project. We are currently trying to find a singer and build a band to that level” said Hosler. He adds that “trying to find quality people for this has not been an easy task.” Once a live band is in place, they will “definitely take advantage of opportunities” like MMC.

Noteworthy Speakers and Mentors
MMC’s agenda includes over 70 keynote speakers, clinics, workshops and panels to ensure those interested and active in the music industry are learning about the future of music.

Noteworthy guests will include Aaron Burton from Fizz Kicks, David Sestak from Media 5 Entertainment, Diane Lockner from Capitol Records, Ed Brennan from Wind Up Records, Freddie Fabbri from Cage Rattle Radio, Jim Fetzer from Fetzer Music Management, and Justin D’Angelo from Roadrunner Records.

Clinics and workshops will cover topics including “Publishing and Copyrights 101,” “Marketing, Networking, Touring and Selling on the Internet,” “Bands as a Small Business,” “Songwriting Workshop,” and “Licensing 101.”

Demo listening sessions will also be held each day of the conference as well as roundtable discussions on topics including a “Local Promoters” roundtable.

According to MMC’s website the conference will “create an exciting and valuable platform for new talent. Performing at the annual event and networking with other musicians, music industry professionals and music fans in this unique conference environment could be integral to your career.”

Conference registration is only $55 up until February 6th. Most showcase performances are free and open to the public.

More information, including showcase schedules, conference agendas, and information on registering, can be found at www.musicconference.net and www.myspace.com/millenniummusicconference.

Here's to 2009

published in Shinbone Magazine, January 2009, http://www.shinbone.net/

After the calendar switches over to 2009 and there has been ample time for some to have gotten over their New Year's Eve hangover, many of us will reflect on the past year and the year ahead.

Quit smoking, lose weight, stop drinking (or drink more?) and finding your soul mate are all common and infamous New Year's resolutions that usually never come to fruition.

Like most of us, bands across Pa. are also reflecting on the past year and declaring resolutions and plans for the New Year: get that big break, earn some cash, bang out new music, improve promotion and of course, TOUR THE WORLD!

2008 – Year in Review
A majority of bands accomplished their New Year's resolutions that they set 365 days ago at the beginning of 2008. "A resolution is a mindset. If you don't follow through, then you honestly never really wanted to do it in the first place," said John Phillips, vocalist for Scranton based OurAfter.

One of the most important 2008 resolutions for local bands was to release new music to the public. OurAfter planned to release their new EP this year, which they did on November 11. The EP, "Tabula Rasa," has been a local success and has received much critical praise.

Stasis, out of Bangor, wanted to "finally get [their] album out," according to guitarist Aaron Hallett. Stasis did accomplish this and have received "positive responses" and are "on the right track," said Julia Glenn, vocalist.

Hierosonic, of Harrisburg, resolved to finally release their album "Kymatica," which will hit the streets on January 31 at their CD release show at the Dragonfly in Harrisburg.

As for unconventional resolutions, Ajar, of Bethlehem, decided to create a comfortable environment for their touring. "We finished transforming a giant school bus into an upscale live-in tour bus that comfortably sleeps nine people," explained Andres Paz, vocals.

With much success during 2008, Pa. bands have set new and superior goals for 2009.

2009 – The Resolutions and Plans
Setting their sites and expectations higher, many bands have resolved to expand their fan base via touring, releasing new music and making a little cash in 2009.

Stasis plans to "book lots of college shows in Pa., NJ, and NY." to bring in "new fans and get some cash to boot," said Hallett. Lead vocalist Glenn said Stasis also plans to "jump on some larger tours and maybe get the chance to play Warped Tour again."

As for new music, Stasis is also planning to record and release two new songs. "We write like crazy and have lots of new music coming your way in the New Year," said Glenn.

TheSilenTreatment, from Wilkes-Barre, have built upon their release of "Sinful Acts of Audio" and plan to further their success in 2009. They plan on releasing an EP in the spring and another full-length album at the end of the year.

TST also hopes "to be making more of an impact nationally as our band, our music, and our name grows in the public consciousness," said Sam Chiarelli, lead guitarist.

In addition to releasing their album in January, Hierosonic has set a goal to be on tour in March or April at the very latest. They also plan to receive national radio air play. "We are going to have a very busy year and we can't wait for it," said Mike Stang, bassist.

Central Pa. band Kinsey is determined to "get [their] van and any other debt paid off so we do not have to rely on 'cover' gigs" which will "allow them to focus on original shows and progress in that area," explained John Springer, lead guitarist.

OurAfter has experienced a lot more attention in 2008 than in previous years, but vocalist Phillips explains that "in this day and age, being an original band means more than making your own music" and it also depends on "connections and hard work."

As for new music, OurAfter is planning on releasing a new album by July or August. Taking things in a different direction, Phillips said that "this CD is going to be a little different than what you would expect… it is something we thought would be a cool head turner."

Ajar may get to use their school bus turned tour bus extensively in 2009. According to Paz, they would like to "spend the majority of the year on the road."

Joining forces with other local heavy hitters, Paz explains that Ajar is "conspiring with other regional acts such as Hierosonic, OurAfter, BOB, and others for a possible US tour in April."

Ashfall, from Scranton, only has one New Years resolution: "to rock more." They, like most regional bands, are planning a small east coast tour and may even "venture out to L.A. again," said Billy Barrett, guitarist.

One Pa. band is planning on going international in 2009. The Underwater, from York, will be touring Indonesia and Asia for several months. They will also be recording a new EP in Los Angeles and working with band members of Daughtry.

The Poptart Monkeys, a staple in the Central and NE Pa. music scenes, will be undergoing a drastic change in 2009. After playing and celebrating New Years Eve at the Cell Block in Williamsport, they will be relocating to Florida.

PTM has had "interest from Hollywood Records and manager Mike Reagan" and are "excited for the next avenue on a higher plateau than PTM has ever known," said Chris Kurtz, guitarist.

The band also plans to be more involved with charitable organizations in the New Year. They will be supporting Bubbles for Kids(www.bubblesforkids.com) foundation, which was founded by Kurtz and his wife to improve the lives of children in need.

Gravity Hill, from Selinsgrove, has recently resurfaced and is "pulling out all the stops" for their new EP which is being recorded at A Street Studios in Northumberland.

Brandon Longacre, bassist, says the band's New Years resolutions are to "pursue a more professional release strategy with our recordings and to build stronger relationships with venues, promoters, retailers and other industry professionals."

Whatever their resolutions and goals may be, 2009 is sure to be an exciting year for local bands and music fans alike. There is much to look forward to: lots of new music and new shows.

No "I" In T-E-A-M: Self-Managed vs. Managed Bands

published in Shinbone Magazine, December 2008, http://www.shinbone.net/

Some people join bands because there's a need to express the music filling their head. Others pick up instruments to further a political agenda or cause. And still others hit the stage for a far more simpler reason - women.

A common desire weaved throughout the Pa. music scene is the attainment of success and stardom. To reach any level of success, management is required to get the music heard, marketed, and promoted.

The choice to self-manage or sign to a management firm is an individual one for each band depending on the level of success they wish to obtain. Regardless of how a band chooses to manage itself, management is necessary.

Doing It Yourself
The business of self-managing a band compares to having another full time job. Instead of focusing solely on writing, recording and performing their music, self-managed bands delve into promoting, booking and marketing their music. These bands are often referred as DIY projects – "do it yourself."

For the past two years, Ryan Kiscaden, drummer and manager of Drop of Grey, has been involved with booking shows, making financial decisions, bookkeeping, networking, attending industry events, establishing rapport with artists and bands, negotiating with club owners, cascading messages, and managing his band members. The duties are never-ending and according to Kiscaden: "the list goes on and on."

Without a manager to provide business contacts, networking is a very important ingredient in the recipe for success. "You have to have close relationships with your fans and business contacts, because at this level you are a nobody and have to prove yourselves to be worthy," said Kiscaden.

Like any business, bands must hold regular business meetings to discuss what ideas and projects are helping or hindering the band. Drop of Grey has "quarterly meetings and also smaller meetings to adjust things we [are] doing" said Kiscaden. These meetings also allow the band to decide which direction to follow in an open discussion.

Terry Selders, owner of Susquehanna Entertainment, a management firm, explains that "successful DIY bands usually divide up the management type jobs between the band members."

Shoot The Moon, from Wilkes-Barre, divides the management duties between each band member. "Everybody does their job… one person is in charge of marketing, another handles finances, another does bookings and public relations," said Sean McGeehan, vocalist.

Ends with Disaster, from Wilkes-Barre, is run much like a democracy. The band "votes on things like merchandise, songs to learn, etc." said Bob Lewis, vocalist and guitarist.

A problem can occur in these situations when certain individuals do not complete their assigned tasks and the project is slowed down. Following a business model, Kiscaden explains that "there is the thought of a bottleneck. The theory of constraints says you can only go as fast as your largest constraint allows."

Outsourcing Your Problems
If there is an aspect of the business that the band has a weakness in, outsourcing is an option. Instead of signing a management contract, individual tasks are conquered by hiring outside companies. Kiscaden says to "highlight those things you are weak at and outsource them when it comes to your band or business."

There are many promotional companies popping up throughout the Pa. region to help bands with these outsourcing projects. Amount 2 Zip, a promotional company, offers services such as graphic design and internet promotion. Although not a management company, Amount 2 Zip "provides bands with publicity that can help them get the word out about their band," said Mike McHale, owner.

Tony Villella, lead guitarist of Dead Horse, a self-managed band from Lock Haven, understands the bright side of self-management. "We have control and first hand knowledge of everything that goes on in the band, and essentially we control our own destiny" he said.

Kiscaden concurs, as he explains why he and his band mates take on the extra stress and work to self-manage their band: "The biggest reason for self-management is that your band is your project. You absolutely will work the hardest when it's you doing the work because you control how far you can take it."

The Management Transition
Management firms offer bands the opportunity to take a step back and focus on their writing, recording and performing, instead of devoting more time to business management.

Tim Farley, vocalist of Pa. based Pan.a.ce.a, who recently signed a management contract with Susquehanna Entertainment, explains that "with each member having not only an ego, personal finances, relationships and family… the hardest part about being in a band is keeping it together… this is where being able to 'manage' is not only important, but necessary."

Pan.a.ce.a was a DIY band until October 2008. According to Farley, "from finding rehearsal spaces and scheduling practices to eventually booking shows, managing money, networking new contacts, creating press kits and electronic press kits, and writing and recording albums," every effort by the band was orchestrated by the band.

Pan.a.ce.a's self-management efforts paid off as they become one of the most popular and most followed bands in Pa.'s music scene. Due to this success, the band needed to set higher goals for itself and decided to sign with Susquehanna Entertainment.

"We chose to seek larger management because managers are like the gatekeepers to the upper echelon of the industry" said Farley.

Signing with a management firm is often seen as taking the project to the next level. "Not every band wants [management] and not every band needs it… it depends on their definition of success" said Farley.

Having a Reputation in the Biz
While self-managed bands may seem to lack credibility to contacts in the music industry, an experienced management firm offers years of experience and usually a long list of important contacts.

Management firms which have "a good reputation in the business… add to the credibility of the artists we represent," said Selders.

If a band determines that they need outside management, they should still stay active in career decisions so they are not taken advantage of. Until the band is able to find an experienced manager, Selders recommends finding "someone outside the band, perhaps a fan with some business experience and the time and desire to assist with management duties, someone who's enthusiastic about the future of the group and wants to be a part of it."

The decision to transition from self-management to a management firm varies from band to band. Kiscaden realizes that once Drop of Grey "gets to a certain level we will need outside management to help us. There are just some contacts we can't get."

Shoot the Moon, who have had several management companies contact them, have created their own successful following as a self-managed band. "We will not sign with a management firm unless they demonstrate something to us that we cannot do ourselves," said McGeehan.

Smoke 'Em If Ya Got 'Em

published in Shinbone Magazine, October 2008, http://www.shinbone.net/

Smoking cigarettes while watching your favorite bands perform at a bar or music venue in Pennsylvania is now a thing of the past. As of September 11, the Pennsylvania Clean Indoor Air Act (CIAA) banned smoking in all public places.

Governor Ed Rendell signed the CIAA into law on June 13. According to a press release from the Office of the Governor, the act will "protect Pennsylvanians from the deadly health effects of secondhand smoke by prohibiting smoking in most public places."

A public place, as defined by the CIAA, is "an enclosed area which serves as a workplace, commercial establishment, or an area where the public is invited or permitted."

The CIAA gives many examples of public places: schools, restaurants, bars, healthcare facilities, vehicles used for mass transportation, child or adult daycare facilities, sports facilities, recreational facilities, theater establishments and nightclubs.
Although when signed into law, the CIAA allowed establishments a "90 day phase-in period to allow for necessary changes to come in to compliance with the new law," most Pa. bar owners say they were not notified of the CIAA. "We were given no notice," said Bob Snyder, owner of the Peppermint Lounge in Sunbury.

Like most laws, the CIAA is not as clear-cut as it may seem. Exceptions can be made to allow smoking under certain circumstances. It allows two exceptions for drinking establishments.

For the first exception, the CIAA states that the establishment must have a valid restaurant liquor license or an eating place retail dispenser license, have an annual total of food sales less than or equal to 20% of the combined gross sales, prohibit individuals under the age of 18 years of age at any time or for any reason, and post signs stating that smoking is permitted.

The second exception applies to restaurants which have an enclosed bar area. Besides meeting the requirements above, the bar area must be a physically connected or adjacent enclosed area which is separate from the eating area and must have a separate air ventilation system and a separate outside entrance.

Drinking establishments which want to be considered for an exception must apply for one through the Pa. Department of Health and wait for approval.

Reactions to the ban have been mixed. The Crocodile Rock Café in Allentown supports the ban. The popular music venue "decided to become smoke free." They feel that it "is the right thing to do" and also urge other business owners to do the same.

Another bar and live music venue, Harry's Grille in Bloomsburg, went smoke free and hasn't experienced any problems. Kat Yanis, assistant manager, explains that "business hasn't been affected and we are still getting the same crowd." Those who do smoke and go to the bar are "taking it in stride" and are "smoking outdoors."

Outsiders, a Wilkes Barre based bar which features bands on weekends, explains that bands seem "to be okay with the ban." Outsiders is fortunate because they have an outside patio and an upstairs deck to accommodate bands and customers who smoke "in between sets."

Outsiders also doesn't see "patrons going to another establishment because of the smoking" and the ban is a "minor inconvenience to pay when you want to be where the action is or where your favorite band is playing."

Skip Horn, owner of The Sterling Hotel in Allentown, believes the smoking ban is the best of both worlds. The weekend after the smoking ban took effect, 200 people attended a show at the venue and only three people complained, one being a staff member.
Horn also pointed out that some vocalists are pleased with the statewide ban. He says that having a smoke free venue doesn't "infringe upon the vocalist's need for clean air" and allows them to sound better and be more professional while on and off stage.

Along with bars and venues, bands and booking agents are also supporting the ban.

The Drama Club discussed the smoking ban at their last practice. Bass player Mike Morgan explains that they "kind of came to the conclusion that this is a good thing in the long run for sanitary reasons and most importantly, people's health."

Morgan also identified a possible problem with not being able to smoke in a bar: "the smoke bone is connected to the beer bone and we are guessing that this may hurt the draw at shows" but hope that these people "will eventually quit."

Mike Mollo, who runs the booking agency BLAM Music in Central Pa., believes that whether or not bands smoke, "if you need a smoke to be good" at a show "you need rehearsal or a new job."

"More great performers would be with us today or would have lived longer had they not smoked," said Mollo.

Almost two years ago, the city of Philadelphia banned smoking in most public places. Dennis Berger, a resident of the city, believes the smoking ban was beneficial to his social life.

In regards to the statewide ban, from his experience Berger explains "the biggest change will be the lack of smoke, not the lack of business or lack of enjoyment. As a non-smoker, the ban has made bars and shows more enjoyable. I no longer come home reeking of cigarettes which I have not smoked."

Although the smoking ban has many supporters it also has many people debating how far the government can go in telling them what to do and what not to do with their own bodies.

Bob Snyder, owner of the Peppermint Lounge in Sunbury, believes that the American government is "taking away our freedoms one at a time" and that our "founding fathers are probably rolling in their graves."

The Peppermint Lounge is complying with the law but may file for an exception. Snyder feels that he may lose business because the "majority" of his customers are smokers and there are many private clubs in the same city that can allow smoking to members.

For the time being, Snyder is fortunate enough to have a sidewalk café permit and can allow smokers to take their drinks with them outside on the sidewalk.

Jim Fetzer, president of Fetzer Music Management, believes that "if a band is told they aren't allowed to smoke at the venue" it may mean that they will "be on their bus or tour vehicle more rather then socializing with their fans."

Fetzer, as a booking agent, will also have to consider what bands he books at certain venues depending on "how difficult it is to get outside to smoke." Venues which "have a lot of stairs just to get to the outside to light up" will not be on the top of his list as to where to promote a show.

Jeanie Eschbach, of Milton, will be going out of her way to find venues and bars that have filed and been approved for exceptions and have a designated smoking area. She explains that "in the upcoming winter months, it will be 'such a drag' to go outside to smoke in the cold."

The Pennsylvania Department of Health's business compliance guide explains that other states are embracing smoking bans.

According to the guide, Reno Trosper, General Manager of Buffalow Wild Wings in Bentonville Arkansas, stated in the Benton County Daily Record in December of 2007 that "there were some people who were annoyed at first and we had to tell some to put out their cigarettes, but by now, it's old hat. Everyone knows the rules and there are no complaints. …Business is as strong as ever."

Like every facet of life, the Pennsylvania CIAA has strong supporters and also a strong opposition. Only time will tell if Pennsylvanians will embrace the smoking ban as other states have
